The best time to visit the Maldives is during the dry season, from November to April, when you can expect blue skies, calm lagoons and very little rain. That said, this archipelago of 1,000+ islands is a year-round destination — and knowing how each month differs will help you find the perfect balance of weather, price and experiences.
The two Maldives seasons
The Maldives has a tropical climate with two monsoon seasons. The dry (northeast) season runs November–April with sunshine, low humidity and gentle seas — ideal for snorkelling, diving and beach days. The wet (southwest) season runs May–October, bringing short, heavy showers, occasional storms and lush, dramatic skies. Temperatures stay warm all year, hovering around 28–31°C.
Month by month
- December–March: Peak season. The finest weather and the highest prices — book early, especially over Christmas and New Year.
- April: Hot, calm and still dry — a sweet spot before the rains, with slightly softer rates.
- May & October: Shoulder months with great value and mostly good weather between passing showers.
- June–September: Green season. The best prices of the year, fewer crowds, and prime time for surfers and manta-ray sightings.
Best time for diving and marine life
Divers are spoilt year-round, but visibility is clearest in the dry season. For manta rays and whale sharks, the plankton-rich waters of the green season (roughly May–November) draw them to atolls like Baa and South Ari. Surfers should aim for June–September, when the swell is at its best.
When is cheapest?
If value matters most, travel in the green season (June–September) or the shoulder months of May and October. You’ll find the same overwater villas and turquoise lagoons for noticeably less — often with resort offers and free nights.
