Once you land at Velana International Airport (MLE) near Malé, one more short journey takes you to your island. Understanding how to get to your Maldives resort helps you choose the right island for your budget and travel style, because transfer type and cost vary a lot between resorts.
Speedboat transfers
Resorts within roughly 20–50 km of the airport are reached by speedboat. Transfers usually take 15–90 minutes, run at all hours, and are the most affordable option. If you’re arriving late at night or want the simplest arrival, a speedboat resort is a great choice.
Seaplane transfers
For resorts further out, you’ll take a seaplane — an unforgettable, scenic flight over turquoise atolls. Seaplanes are a highlight in themselves, but they only operate in daylight, cost more, and may involve a short wait at the seaplane lounge. Aim for a daytime arrival so you don’t need an overnight in Malé.
Domestic flight + speedboat
The most distant atolls combine a domestic flight to a regional airport with a short speedboat to the resort. It’s a little more involved but opens up some of the most remote, pristine islands in the country.
Which should you choose?
- Lowest cost / late arrival: Speedboat resort
- Best scenery / bucket-list arrival: Seaplane resort (travel in daylight)
- Remote & exclusive: Domestic flight + speedboat
