Beneath the postcard surface, the Maldives is one of the world’s great underwater destinations. Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned diver, snorkeling in the Maldives puts vibrant coral, turtles, reef sharks and rays within easy reach — often just steps from your villa.

The house reef advantage

Many resorts have their own house reef encircling the island, so you can snorkel straight from the beach or your overwater deck. When choosing a resort, a healthy, accessible house reef is a huge plus for snorkellers.

Marine life you might meet

  • Manta rays — best in the green season around Baa Atoll’s Hanifaru Bay
  • Whale sharks — gentle giants seen year-round in South Ari Atoll
  • Turtles, reef sharks and eagle rays — common on many house reefs
  • Clownfish, parrotfish and reef fish in every colour imaginable

Best time to dive

Diving is superb all year, but visibility peaks in the dry season (November–April). For big pelagics like mantas and whale sharks, the plankton-rich green season (May–November) is prime time.

New to diving?

Most resorts have a PADI dive centre offering try-dives and certification courses, plus guided snorkelling safaris to nearby reefs and channels. It’s a wonderful place to learn.
