Dreaming of turquoise water and overwater villas but not sure where to start? This first-time Maldives travel guide explains how the destination actually works, so you can plan with confidence.

How the Maldives works

The Maldives is made up of more than 1,000 islands grouped into atolls. Most visitors stay at a one-island resort — a single private island with one hotel — so your choice of island shapes your entire holiday. There are also guesthouses on local islands for a more budget-friendly, cultural stay.

Choosing the right island

Because you’ll spend most of your time on one island, match it to your priorities: romance, family, diving, dining or value. Consider the villa type (water vs beach), the transfer, the meal plan and the overall vibe.

Getting there

You’ll fly into Velana International Airport near Malé, then continue by speedboat, seaplane or domestic flight to your resort. Try to arrive in daylight if your island uses a seaplane.

Money, visas and practicalities

  • Most nationalities get a free 30-day visa on arrival — check your country’s requirements.
  • Resorts are cashless; US dollars and cards are used, with a green tax and service charge added.
  • The Maldives is a Muslim country; resorts are relaxed, but dress modestly if you visit a local island.

When to go and what it costs

The dry season (November–April) has the best weather; the green season (May–October) offers the best value. Read our guides on the best time to visit and how much a trip costs to plan your budget.
